AGM BATTERIES A LOW-COST ALTERNATIVE TO LITHIUM-ION

We all want the most from our golf cars, but some of us are not interested in spending a lot on batteries. While Lithium-ion (Li) batteries have many advantages, they are more expensive and require a specific battery charger.  This is why many golf car owners stick with the deep-cycle Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) lead-acid battery as a great alternative.

The benefits of using AGMs are many, especially knowing that they require minimal maintenance and are less expensive than Li batteries. By comparison, AGMs use lead plates suspended in glass mats made of micro glass fibers. Li batteries are made up of several cylindrical lithium cells, or higher density rectangular prismatic lithium cells, which are managed by a built-in electronic management system.

Like Lithium batteries, AGMs are also sealed and won’t leak, even when placed vertically or horizontally in the golf car. AGMs can also be used in the most extreme weather conditions due to their construction and don’t require a special heating element for extreme cold-weather operation, unlike Li batteries do.

In golf cars, AGM batteries also deliver exceptional reliability without the regular maintenance that Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA) batteries require, and are nearly 100% recyclable, making them a great choice for owners concerned about the environment and who want to use a sustainable power source for their vehicles.

Also consider that there have been many design advancements in AGM batteries, including corrosion resistance of the positive electrodes. This enables the batteries to last much longer than earlier designs. To reduce charge times and improve charging efficiency, carbon-enhanced negative active materials are being utilized, making AGMs much more adaptable for charging at every opportunity.

AGM KEY BENEFITS

  • Minimal maintenance
  • Nearly 100% recyclable
  • Spill-proof and shock-resistant
  • Works better in freezing temperatures
  • Great for small battery compartments with less ventilation
  • Low self-discharge rate
  • Can be installed vertically or horizontally (on its side)

Golf car owners who drive their vehicles for short distances multiple times, and who consistently keep AGM batteries charged will see great long-term reliability. Making sure the batteries don’t discharge more than 50% of their full charge is also a great way to extend AGM battery longevity.
